POLAND, Ohio (WYTV) – Our retirement centers are filled with stories of successful, hard-working people who still have so much more to offer. One of those people is Jean Williams, who taught school for 47 years and is still changing lives.

Delonte Carter takes care of Jean at the Sunrise Senior Living Center in Poland. He never thought she would be the key to his future.

Delonte graduated from Chaney in 2011. Working as an aide at Sunrise, he dreamed of something more.

Seniors from St. Charles’ Brighton Gardens volunteer at Northern Illinois Food Bank

To create a picture in your mind that the senior citizens living at Brighton Gardens of St. Charles basically eat, sleep and watch TV all day would be a terribly inaccurate portrayal.

Sure, the health of some of our elderly would be cause for a sedentary lifestyle, but some Brighton residents are carrying on with the passions in their life — volunteering to help others.

The Northern Illinois Food Bank is the local recipient of some Brighton residents’ energy and desire to help others.

Older St. Bernard finds home as companion in assisted living community

Who knows the sadness dogs experience when they’re surrendered to a shelter when their owner no longer wants them or, for whatever reason, can no longer care for them.

Well, an older St. Bernard that was turned in to Macomb County Animal Control is now getting a lot of love in his new home with the senior citizens at Sunrise of Bloomfield in Bloomfield Hills.

Erica McCarthy and Courtney Chisholm are both with the non-profit known as the Canine Companions Rescue Center, and they pulled the St. Bernard from the shelter in hopes of finding him a new home.

Sunrise of Sabre Springs offers personalized care for seniors

Sunrise Senior Living opened the doors of its newest facility, Sunrise of Sabre Springs, this week after celebrating with an open house on June 22.

The event included tours of the facility, sampling the menu that will be available to residents and a visit from Poway Mayor Steve Vaus during the ribbon cutting.

The first residents of the community, at 12515 Springhurst Drive, moved in on Tuesday.

Intergenerational prom earns raves

NORTH CALDWELL – The theme for the 2017 Intergenerational Prom held on Thursday, April 6 was “A Knight in Paradise” and according to organizers it lived up to expectations.

All guests at West Essex Regional High School (WEHS) received Hawaiian leis to wear, and a flora centerpiece decorated each table. The senior citizens also took home photos capturing their moments in a photo booth provided.

The Intergenerational Prom is a school-initiated outreach event focusing on integrating the senior community with the school community. This year we had approximately 150 people in attendance.

Children’s Enrichment Center Launches Child-Senior Music Program

Not Just Art, an enrichment center for kids located in Oyster Bay, recently launched a Music Together®Generations program, in which young children and seniors jointly participate in a music-themed class.

“In this special Music Together class we expand our circle to include ‘Grandfriends,’ seniors who live in an assisted living facility,” says program director Deirdre Savino. “We encourage the children to interact with the seniors. However, seniors can be involved in whatever way they feel comfortable, same with the children,” Savino says.
